In the fourth quarter of 2023, the top five communication apps in Africa—WhatsApp Messenger, WhatsApp Business, Telegram, Snapchat, and Messenger—exhibited varying performance metrics. Below is a closer look at their weekly downloads, active users, and revenue trends.

WhatsApp Messenger from WhatsApp LLC saw a consistent flow of weekly downloads, peaking at approximately 1.5M in late October and December. Weekly active users hovered around 130M to 132M throughout the quarter. Revenue remained stable at around $4-$6 per week.

WhatsApp Business, also from WhatsApp LLC, had strong weekly downloads, reaching a peak of about 928K in late October before dropping to around 647K by the end of December. Active users ranged from 11.5M to 11.8M during this period.

Telegram from Telegram FZ-LLC experienced a slight decline in weekly downloads, starting at 871K in early October and falling to around 627K by the end of December. Active users remained relatively steady at around 25M to 26M. Revenue saw a notable increase, peaking at approximately $12.7K in the final week of December.

Snapchat from Snap Inc showed a fluctuating trend in weekly downloads, starting at 742K in late September and ending at 601K by the end of December. Active users saw a gradual increase, reaching up to 35M by the end of the quarter. Revenue improved throughout the quarter, peaking at roughly $9.9K in the final week of December.

Messenger from Meta Platforms, Inc. had a consistent download rate, ranging from 415K to 486K. Active users increased slightly from 102M to around 103M. Revenue showed variability, with a significant peak of about $136 in mid-December.
